“Compared with consumer-grade IGBTs, automotive IGBT modules have a series of special requirements.” Chen Ziying said that on the one hand, the car itself is a constantly changing subject, including changes in load and climate, and the vehicle may be affected. At the same time, this series of changes will affect the life of IGBT devices.

On the other hand, in addition to the changes in load and temperature, the IGBT module for vehicles requires higher performance, higher switching frequency and stronger vibration resistance.

In general, the application technology characteristics of electric commercial vehicles are frequently changing loads, large temperature changes caused by cold start, vibrations at different installation positions, and relatively high modulation frequencies.

Chen Ziying said that the above application characteristics of electric commercial vehicles have brought many challenges to IGBT modules. For example, the temperature change of the solder layer between the DCB and the substrate will cause the termination of the life of the IGBT module once the solder layer falls off.

The data shows that IGBT accounts for more than 40% of the total cost of the motor controller, accounting for 8%-10% of the cost of the new energy vehicle. Among them, most of the components used in China's new energy vehicle motor controllers are imported, resulting in the cost of China's motor controllers being 1.2-1.8 times higher than that of foreign countries. It is reported that the highest proportion of motor controller procurement costs is IGBT products.

Chen Ziying said that because of the high cost and performance requirements of electric commercial vehicles. Infineon has developed an IGBT product for electric commercial vehicles that uses pre-coated thermal materials to save 19 euros in material, space and production man-hours with the same quality and reliability. At the same time, the product has a longer life.
