Michelin funded waste tire recycling program

The Michelin Group decided to fund two projects in the TREC ( Tire Recycling ) program that are dedicated to the recycling of scrap tires by mechanical means and chemical means. It is reported that TREC’s budget for the eight years is 69 million U.S. dollars, of which 21 million U.S. dollars will be provided by the French Environment and Energy Administration.

Michelin dominated by the TREC project aims to develop mechanical waste tire recycling and chemical recycling methods. The mechanical recycling project is expected to produce reclaimed rubber for the manufacture of new tires. Michelin is working with two other companies to develop micronized production technologies, using biotechnology for micronization and selective desulphurization.

Chemical recovery methods produce chemical intermediates for the raw materials needed to make tires. The ethanol method will also help Michelin's 2013 announcement of the BioButterfly biobased butadiene project. The company said that the move will complement the project's efforts to extract ethanol from biomass (such as sugar, wood, agricultural residues, etc.).
