Recently, a research team composed of the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Bacter OMIC is developing an analytical instrument called BacterOMIC AST that allows doctors to obtain antibacterial resistance against bacteria in specific patients within hours. Complete and accurate data for medicinal properties.
The R&D and implementation of this innovative equipment was funded by a total of 3.7 million PLN from the TEAM-TECH project of the Polish Science Foundation.
Existing analytical instruments do not provide complete information about the susceptibility of bacteria, nor do they test the efficacy of the drug combination. In general, these devices only test specific bacterial resistance to several antibiotics, classify them simply as resistant or not, or as intermediates. This type of general data often does not allow doctors to make reasonable decisions. For example, all antibiotics may be marked as ineffective in the antibiogram.
To address this situation, researchers developed the BacterOMIC AST. Bacteria samples extracted and diluted from patients are divided into hundreds of micro samples. Each sample was placed in a microcell on a small, removable disposable plastic panel. There are hundreds of microcells on this plastic panel, each containing different concentrations of different drugs. After the analysis sample was added, cell culture was performed simultaneously in all microcells. A few hours later, the instrument evaluates the development of the colony and shows complete information on the susceptibility of the bacteria to various antibiotics in the patient.
A single panel in the BacterOMIC AST can test the efficacy of up to 97 antibiotics, including all clinically important antibiotics. It is envisaged that the antibacterial spectrum provided by the device is not only complete but also contains accurate information on the effectiveness of each antibiotic. On this basis, doctors can determine the best therapy for specific infections. The team also intends to experiment with selected combinations of antibiotics in microcells to better understand the mechanism of bacterial resistance. Existing devices are not yet able to provide this type of information.
According to a report from the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, a BacterOMIC AST can analyze 60 panels at the same time, and the cost of a single panel is comparable to that of existing test equipment. The device is currently in the prototype development stage and has been tested for bacterial culture and monitoring its growth in microcells. The prototype is expected to be completed in the fall and will be tested in laboratories in Poland and abroad. The researchers hope that the first BacterOMIC can enter clinical application within four years.
