Several Japanese and domestic companies announced in early May that they plan to cooperate to inject CO2 generated from coal-fired power plants into oil fields to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase crude oil production in China's oil fields.
Japanese companies participating in this project include JGC Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation, as well as the Earth Innovation Branch Institute managed by the Japanese government. Domestic companies include CNPC and China Huadian Corporation. According to the plan, starting in 2009, participating cooperatives will transfer carbon dioxide emitted from coal-fired power plants in Harbin, Heilongjiang, to Daqing Oilfield in the west for gas injection and production increase, with a transmission distance of approximately 100 kilometers. Daqing Oilfield currently produces more than 40 million tons of high-viscosity crude oil annually. The study estimates that injecting carbon dioxide will increase the fluidity of crude oil and make it easy to extract. It is reported that this plan can increase crude oil production in Daqing Oilfield by 1.5 million to 2 million tons/year, and it can accumulate 150 million tons of accumulated carbon dioxide, which will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and control global warming.
