The world's largest TPI plant has been successfully tested

The world’s largest trans-isoprene rubber (TPI) device with China’s independent intellectual property rights—an annual production capacity of 500 tons of TPI production equipment was successfully tested at the Qingdao Auxiliary Plant of Qingdao Science and Technology University’s Urban Science and Technology Park. This technological breakthrough has reduced the price of TPI from 10 times that of ordinary rubber to less than 2 times, which will effectively promote the development of high-performance green tires in China.
Trans isoprene rubber, trans-1,4-polyisoprene, also known as synthetic gutta percha, is an isomer with natural rubber and cis isoprene rubber (IR). Because trans-isoprene rubber has low heat generation, dynamic performance and fatigue resistance, it is an ideal material for manufacturing high-performance energy-saving environmental protection tires and automotive shock absorber products. However, due to its complicated process and high production cost, the product price is more than 10 times that of ordinary rubber materials and can only be applied in special fields such as medical materials. It is understood that Canada Polysar Corporation, British Dunlop Company, Japan Kurary Company, etc. have built an annual output of 400 tons of trans-isoprene rubber device, but only Japanese Kurury company's device is in production.
In 1997, Qingdao University of Science and Technology developed a new technology for titanium-catalyzed isoprene in-house precipitation polymerization to synthesize trans-isoprene rubber. In 2000, this new technology with independent intellectual property rights won the second prize for national technology invention. Compared with the vanadium system solution polymerization adopted abroad, the titanium-loaded catalytic system can significantly reduce the price of trans-isoprene rubber, which is less than twice the price of ordinary rubber materials, and is an extension of trans-isoprene rubber, especially at high speeds. The application of energy-saving tires creates favorable conditions.
According to Professor Huang Baoqi of Qingdao University of Science and Technology, among all rubber materials currently used in tires, the rolling resistance and heat generation of the transfused isoprene rubber is the lowest, which is only about 50% of the latex polybutadiene rubber. Moreover, any compound (including low rolling resistance, low heat-polymerized styrene-butadiene rubber) and TPI can significantly reduce the rolling resistance and heat, which is of great significance for the development of high-performance environmental protection tires.
The use of 20 to 25 parts by mass of TPI in the tread rubber has proved to be able to save about 2.5% of car fuel consumption and travel mileage of more than 150,000 kilometers. Based on this calculation, one ton of TPI-produced tires can save 70 to 80 tons of fuel, reducing the carbon dioxide emissions of automobile exhaust by about 200 tons, and the economic and social benefits are very prominent.
