Volvo Trucks developed a collision warning system with emergency braking to avoid serious collisions caused by distraction.
Due to the large proportion of rear-end collisions in road accidents, Volvo Trucks developed a collision warning system with emergency braking. This system will help the driver effectively avoid and reduce the occurrence of rear-end collisions. It has been applied to Volvo Truck's new FH series.
The new system recognizes and monitors the vehicles in front through the radar and camera that work at the same time. It can avoid colliding with vehicles that are stationary in front or whose relative speed is within 70 kilometers per hour. When the system detects that the truck is hitting the vehicle in front at the current speed, it will automatically start a blinking red light pattern at the windshield to prompt the driver to concentrate on the road immediately.
Carl Johan Almqvist, director of Volvo truck traffic and product safety, pointed out: "The new system does not replace the functionality of the driver. We believe that they are the only guarantee for safe driving."
However, if the truck detects that the driver did not give any feedback when the accident is imminent, such as adjusting the steering wheel or the brakes, the warning system will be upgraded to a flashing red light with a beep to alert the driver. If there is still no response, the system will automatically take a soft brake. When all attempts fail, the emergency braking function will be activated and stop the truck completely by all means.
