Independent dual input 950mA lithium battery charger

Linear Technology Corporation has introduced independent dual-input linear battery chargers, the LTC4076 and LTC4077. Both devices charge a single-cell Li-Ion battery from a wall adapter or USB power source. The LTC4076 and LTC4077 use a constant current/constant voltage charging algorithm that can be programmed up to 950mA with a wall adapter power supply and up to 650mA with a USB power supply, while automatically detecting the presence of each input voltage.

Among them, the LTC4076 has a programmable C/x charge current termination function, while the LTC4077 has a fixed C/10 termination function. The LTC4076 provides a fixed C or C/5 USB charging current selection for low-power USB operation (via the HPWR pin), while the LTC4077 provides programmable C or C/x low-power USB charging current (via the HPWR pin). Applications include PDAs, MP3 players, digital cameras, lightweight portable medical and test equipment, and large color screen cellular phones.

With a final floating voltage accuracy of ±0.6%, the LTC4076 and LTC4077 feature a patented thermal regulation circuit that maximizes charge rates without risk of overheating. These two devices are extremely flexible and can be programmed with a single resistor: wall adapter power supply charging current, USB power supply charging current, and charge termination current. As stand-alone chargers, they also feature trickle charge for battery pre-check, under-voltage lockout, automatic recharge, charge status indication, and a “power present” status output indicating the presence of a wall adapter or USB power source.

The LTC4076 and LTC4077 are available in a low profile (0.75mm) 10-lead 3 x 3mm DFN package. Since no external MOSFETs, sense resistors or isolation diodes are required, the total solution footprint is less than 25mm2. To conserve battery power, the LTC4076 and LTC4077 draw < 6μA from the battery terminal in standby mode and < 2μA in shutdown mode.

The LTC4076 and LTC4077 are rated for operation over the -40°C to 85°C temperature range. Buy in 1,000-piece quantities starting at $1.88 each (for reference only).
