The difference is not small


As long as you walk to the parts booth, you can hear and see only two central words: OEM and modularization. The relationship between the two is self-evident. This has already become the threshold for domestic parts and components companies to overcome. The strong signal reflected from the Beijing International Auto Show shows that this threshold has grown a lot.

"We are system suppliers"

Marelli, GKN, Valeo, Dana, Mobis... Many foreign large-scale parts and components groups have all appeared at the Beijing auto show. During the interview, the reporter found that these companies all displayed their products in the form of modules. And almost all corporate executives said in an interview with reporters: We are optimistic about the Chinese market.

They do have reason to be optimistic.

Four years after joining the World Trade Organization, China’s import tariff on parts and components has dropped to 15%, and a large number of parts and components have started to flood the domestic market. Allegedly, nearly 30% of all new cars that were newly listed in 2003 were imported. According to statistics, China’s parts and components imports amounted to more than 6 billion euros last year, equivalent to 30% of the annual sales of the domestic parts and components industry.

In this auto show, the reporter interviewed several foreign parts companies.

Guo Qing, Senior Manager of Continental Automotive Systems Division of Continental Group, said: “Continental China is one of the largest manufacturers of hydraulic electronic brake systems, stability control systems and chassis systems, and electronic air suspension systems.”

Mr. Barcelari, General Manager of Marelli Power Systems (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., said: "Internationally, Marelli has taken a leading position in designing and manufacturing high-tech automotive systems and their components."

Similar introductions, the reporter heard many. It is worth noting that they all emphasize that we are system suppliers.

What is the concept of "system vendor"?

Perhaps using Mr. Barcelari's words to explain the comparative image, when introducing the Marelli's power system to reporters, he said: "We can produce everything from the intake manifold to the engine management system and then the exhaust pipe." Said that Marelli can provide a complete power system for the vehicle factory.

In contrast, the veteran of a state-owned large-scale parts company frankly stated that none of the domestic parts and components companies dare to say that they are system suppliers.
"Our living space is getting smaller and smaller."

During the auto show, Tian Yushi, General Manager of FAW-Fuzhou Automotive Parts Co., Ltd., made a surprising statement at a parts forum: “The auto factory is our God. Their days are getting better and better, and our living space is getting bigger. The smaller it is."

His words won the approval of the CEOs of most domestic parts and components companies on the spot, and the foreigners of those multinational companies frequently shook their heads.

At Tian Yushi's point of view, the pressure from foreign-funded enterprises, product certifications, and foreign procurement strategies has caused domestic spare parts companies to exhaust their lives.

He believes that after a new model is launched in the domestic market, domestic parts companies want to supply, but they cannot, because you must pass the certification of foreign parts manufacturers. Originally, those foreign parts makers were already suppliers of parts for that new model. Now that you are going to take away his rice bowl, how could he pass you the quality certification and how can you be willing to give you a certificate?

As if to comment on Tian Yushi’s words, at the exhibition, the reporter heard from a FAW-Volkswagen staff member of a joint venture parts and components company: “These things you will be engaged in localization, as long as the German certification finishes us. Can you use it? Volkswagen has no ability to certify this thing, but also has to commission your company (Note: refers to its German parent company) certification, what is the difficulty!

Among the domestic parts and components companies interviewed by the reporter, most of the products are mechanical products, and only a few are mechatronic products. There is basically no enterprise that can provide modular products.

Dream off modular?

At this year's Beijing auto show, the products of domestic and foreign parts and components companies are very different in terms of technology. For example, in the same transmission system components, Chinese companies only displayed components such as drive shafts and drive shafts, while products of foreign companies appeared in the form of modules.

Mobis from South Korea demonstrated a modular car that vividly demonstrated the many chassis system modules developed by the company, such as the chassis module, front module, and so on. The company’s Mr. Ruan told reporters that Mobis plans to enter the Chinese market on a large scale, and that it is developing various modular systems.

The GKN Transmission System Department from the United Kingdom displayed a number of module systems such as front and rear suspension assemblies at this show, which attracted many professional visitors. According to its staff, GKN only produces part of the components of the modular system, but the emergence of the module can guarantee the status of GKN first-tier suppliers.

There are many similar foreign companies. The reporter noted that almost all foreign large-scale component enterprise groups displayed their own various module systems at this auto show.

More than a decade ago, the relevant state departments had planned parts and components of “little giant” companies and wanted to build China’s own strong parts and components companies. Unfortunately, these are basically collapsed. The reason why this is important is that China’s spare parts industry was largely based on parts for commercial vehicles because it had almost no passenger cars of its own. Under such market conditions, the investment of most large-scale parts and components companies has not fully exerted their effectiveness. With the concept of modular supply being gradually accepted by domestic automakers, the market development space for domestic parts and components companies has become narrower and narrower, and can only survive in the human modules. It is obvious to all that more and more domestic parts and components companies are becoming and become the second-tier suppliers of multinational parts and components groups.

Being a powerful automobile country is the goal set by the new industrial policy, but as more and more foreign companies implement a modularization strategy in China, the spare space for China's spare parts companies is constantly being compressed. Just think, if the foundation of the auto industry cannot be firm, how can we realize the dream of a powerful nation?
